Resident Action Net is an online newspaper and
resource for residents and activists striving to improve their communities.
While "news" is a component of what we seek to deliver, we are less interested
in the latest "story", and more interested in tracking issues from birth to
resolution. We try to show how the issue was raised, by whom, what community
and other resources were brought to bear at each step, and how the issue was
resolved. We essentially present a case study and time line for each issue.
Many of these cases are currently in progress.
RAN is especially useful for issues reaching across communities. In addition to presenting the information, we provide communication
tools to facilitate communiities working together.
As with the community web site system, our goal is to pool the knowledge and
resources of neighborhoods to make life better, and for neighbors to get to
know each other better.
We hope that through the community web sites and RAN, as well as local civic
groups, we can create an institutional memory, both at the neighborhood and
metro levels, that will help residents sit at the table and negotiate mutually acceptable agreements with groups that have far greater resources.
This is especially important as the neighborhood representatives turnover
frequently by nature.
RAN is not staffed by any paid members. We depend on residents to bring us their news, and to contribute to the site. Please
join us! Click here to e-mail us your material or call 301-263-9821.
RAN is a public service of Community Web. Please visit
your neighborhood website and support our cause.
